HMS Victory 1744: Wreck Site Management Consultation

The UK’s Ministry of Defence and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport have issued a public consultation into possible management options for the recently discovered HMS Victory. The ship and her crew of over a thousand men were lost during storms when she became separated from the rest of the fleet on her return journey from Gibraltar after a successful mission in Portugal.

The wreck of HMS Victory, the third ship of that name and known as “Balchin’s Victory” after the Admiral who commanded it, was recently discovered in the Western English Channel, outside UK territorial waters, at a depth of 80m. In view of the unique importance of this Sovereign Immune wreck site for British naval heritage, the Ministry of Defence and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport are issuing a public consultation paper on the possible future management approaches for the wreck site.

PADI will be responding to the consultation, but any member of the public can do so also.  Please be aware that the wreck, although just outside territorial waters, is a sovereign immune vessel, and as such has UK Government protection.

Please have your say and join the consultation – or forward your views to us at PADI to inform our own submission
